Newcastle Proximity to Discovery Programme
The Newcastle Proximity to Discovery (PtD) programme is an 18 month renewable MRC awarded to Newcastle University in November 2014.
The goal of the Newcastle PtD programme is to address, in a systematic and innovative fashion – the ‘third translational gap’, i.e. the bilateral knowledge gap between Universities and industry, by understanding the needs of industry partners in order to develop collaborative programmes of week-long themed activities which generate new collaborative projects and partnerships between Newcastle University and industry partners
The PtD programme runs in parallel with Newcastle University’s renewed and expanded MRC Confidence in Concept (CiC) scheme, with collaborative project ideas arising from PtD generating a pipeline for CiC applications.
Newcastle’s successful PtD award described 3 interrelated work strands that would be delivered as part of the programme including:
- Incoming Placements – Placements of senior managers from industry into week-long activity programmes, based around designated clinical and scientific themes, comprising a range of activity including but not restricted to
- Outgoing Placements – Opportunities for Newcastle University staff to undertake placements in industry
- NU Solutions – ‘Industry challenge fora’; Industrial partners invited to submit specific challenges to Newcastle University for researchers to propose potential solutions
