MRC Proximity to Discovery: Industry Engagement Fund
The Medical Research Council (MRC) Proximity to Discovery (PtD): Industry Engagement Fund enables more and better interactions between academics doing discovery science and researchers from across the life sciences industry sectors, both in the UK and more widely.
Newcastle University received a share of £3m from the MRC to help develop new collaborations, and ways of exchanging knowledge and skills. Newcastle University’s PtD award was the highest of all the UK universities that applied to the MRC.
Dr Chris Watkins, Director of Translation and Industry at the Medical Research Council, said:
“The UK provides great opportunities for life science companies by providing a critical mass of scientific excellence in our universities. The MRC plays a leading role in maximising discovery science in the UK and shaping the research base by investing in people and capabilities, so that academic and industry researchers can carry out the research they need to do accelerate the development of new treatments and technologies for improving health.”
PtD can be used to support activities that promote the value of academic-industry partnership, and enhance academic and industry researchers’ understanding of each other’s needs and capabilities. This may be through people exchanges, creation of technology demonstrators, showcase events, commercialisation workshops and ‘entrepreneurs in residence’ schemes.
